About Iowa (IA) Lottery

The Iowa Lottery has been making a difference since it was established in 1985, combining entertainment with real impact across the state. Created to generate revenue for important state programs, the Iowa Lottery continues to support projects that benefit all Iowans while providing players with the excitement of winning.

The lottery launched with an instant-scratch game called Scratch, Match, and Win, which saw massive success by selling over 6.4 million tickets in its first week alone. Iowa also became a national leader in promoting responsible gaming, setting the first minimum lottery-playing age of 21 in the country in 1994.

Today, the Iowa Lottery offers a wide variety of games, including Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto America, Lucky for Life, Pick 3, and Pick 4, as well as instant scratch games, pull-tab games, and InstaPlay options.

How Iowa Lottery Proceeds Support the State

The Iowa Lottery has raised over $2 billion for state programs and paid out more than $4.5 billion in prizes since it began. Proceeds help fund vital initiatives across four key areas:
  • Iowa Veterans Trust Fund - Supporting veterans and their families.
  • Iowa Public Safety Survivor Benefits Fund - Providing assistance to the families of fallen peace officers and firefighters.
  • State General Fund - Financing major public projects and services.
  • Vision Iowa Program - Boosting tourism, building attractions, and improving school facilities.

When players buy a ticket, they are helping to build stronger communities, safer neighborhoods, better education, and a better quality of life for everyone in Iowa.
