About Massachusetts (MA) Lottery

With many notable “Firsts in US Lottery”, Massachusetts Lottery is one of the earliest Lottery operating states in the US. The MA Lottery is the first state lottery that introduced US Lotto game in 1978, called MA Lotto. It was the Mass lottery that launched the instant lottery tickets first time ever in the US in May 1974, with an instant top prize of ten grand. Also, Massachusetts lottery is the first to allow the players to buy the lottery tickets online using credit cards.

The Massachusetts Lottery was created in 1971 with a legislation to establish a state lottery. Since its inception, Mass Lottery handed out huge jackpots to its players, including an $18 million jackpot in Mega Bucks lottery in March 1984 and a $197 million jackpot in Big Game followed by another huge Jackpot of #363 million in the same game. During these big jackpot days, MA lottery sales have touched $10 million a day.

Mass lottery profits are distributed to the commonwealth as per local aid formula established by the state legislature. In 2014, MA lottery reported the profit of $971 million. In the 2016 year itself, Massachusetts lottery returned more than $980 million to the 351 cities and towns of the commonwealth.

The games Mass Lottery offers include,

The Number Game, a four-digit draw game played twice daily. The minimum bet is 25Cents.

Mass Cash, with top prize $100,000. Player has to choose five numbers from 1 through 35. If the player able to match only four numbers then the prize would be $250 and for three numbers match the payout is $10.

Mega Bucks Doubler, the players have to choose six numbers from 1 through 49. The draws are two times a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The jackpot starts at $500,000. For 5 numbers match the payout is $2,500 and for 4 numbers match it is $100. For 3 numbers match the prize would be $2. If the player matches the Doubler number the non-jackpot prizes will be doubled.

Apart from above state-operated lotteries, Mass Lottery also offers multi-jurisdictional games. MA lottery started offering Lucky For Life since 2012. Mega Millions with Megaplier became available in Massachusetts from 2011. MA lottery added Powerball to its list of games in Jan 31st, 2010.

How do you collect lottery winnings in Massachusetts ?

Moving forward, these are the options you have to claim the lottery prize in Massachusetts

In-Person Claim
  • Prizes of $1 - $600 can be redeemed in person at any Lottery retailer or at the Lottery Office.

  • Prizes worth between $601 - $103,000 should be claimed in person at any Massachusetts Lottery office.

  • The lottery requires the following documents in order to claim a prize above $601:

  • The signed winning ticket

  • Signed photo ID (Driver's license, Mass ID, Passport, Work ID, or Military ID)

  • Proof of social security number such as Driver's License with Social Security number, Social Security card (signed), W-2 Form that shows 9-digit SSN, SSA-1099 Form that shows 9-digit SSN, Non-SSA-1099 Form that shows 9-digit SSN, or Pay stub that shows 9-digit SSN.

  • Prizes that exceed $103,000 can only be claimed in person at the Massachusetts Lottery Headquarters in Dorchester.

Mail-in Claim
  • You can opt for the mail claim option to claim prizes of $1 up to $50,000. All you have to do is:

  • Put your signature on the back of your winning lottery ticket.

  • Print and complete the Winner Claim Form for your winning ticket.

  • Add the photocopies of your proof of social security card and signed photo ID for winnings between $601 to $50,000.

  • Don't forget to keep copies of the signed front and back of your ticket(s) and your Claim Form before sending via mail.

  • Mailing Address: Massachusetts State Lottery, P.O. Box 859036, Braintree, MA 02185-9036.

Mobile Cashing
  • You can use the mobile cashing function of the Mass Lottery app to claim winning lottery tickets between $601 to $5,000. You have to download and create a Player account first to use this method.

What age do I have to be to play the Massachusetts lottery?
Lottery tickets cannot be bought by those under the age of 18. The director may, however, order payment of the amount to the minor if a winning ticket purchased by an adult is claimed on behalf of a person under the age of 18. A cheque or draft made out to the minor's order and sent to a guardian of the minor or an adult family member is acceptable for prizes under $5,000. For winnings over $5,000, the money may be transferred to any bank in the name of an adult relative of the minor or a guardian of the minor, who will serve as the account's custodian.
How can I claim my prize from the Massachusetts Lottery?

Prizes below $600 may be paid out by any lottery sales agent. You can claim prizes starting at $600 and going up to $100,000 at any Massachusetts Lottery office (Dorchester, Woburn, New Bedford, Braintree, Springfield, or Worcester). Any prizes worth more than $100,000 must be redeemed at the Lottery Head office in Dorchester. If a winner dies before receiving the complete annual payments, what happens to the rest of the money?
In such situations, the rest of the annual payments will go the estate of the late prize winner.
Are Massachusetts lottery winnings taxable? How much will be withheld?
A tax of 5% is deducted from prizes above $600 and delivered to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. If the prize is from $5,000 upwards, 24% of the money will be withheld for Federal tax and delivered to the Internal Revenue Service, while the Massachusetts Department of Revenue shall hold on to another 5% of the money.
