Overall Odds

What do overall odds mean in the New Jersey Lottery?
In New Jersey, overall odds refer to the average chance of winning any prize in a game, not just the top prize:
  • For example, a scratch-off game might have 1 in 3.6 overall odds, meaning that on average, one out of every 3.6 tickets will result in a win, whether it's a small amount or a large payout.
  • These odds cover all prize levels, from free tickets or $5 wins up to multi‐million‐dollar jackpots, providing a complete view of a game's reward potential.
  • It's important to remember that odds apply across the full ticket population, so individual outcomes are still based on chance.
Lost Ticket Policy

What is the New Jersey Lottery's policy on lost tickets?
In New Jersey, a lottery ticket is considered a bearer instrument, which means:
  • The person in possession of the ticket is considered the rightful owner, so if you lose it, the lottery cannot issue a replacement or honor a win without the original ticket.
  • To protect your winnings, it is strongly recommended to sign the back of the ticket as soon as you buy it, which provides a level of security if the ticket is misplaced.
  • If a ticket is lost, even with proof of purchase, no prize can be awarded, because only the physical ticket is valid for claiming prizes.
Second Chance Promotions

Does New Jersey offer second chance lottery promotions?
Yes, the New Jersey Lottery actively runs second chance promotions, giving players additional opportunities to win prizes using non winning tickets:
  • Players can submit eligible non‐winning scratch‐offs into online second chance drawings through the NJ Lottery VIP Club.
  • Prizes can include cash, trips, electronics, and exclusive event experiences, depending on the promotion.
  • These events are typically tied to themed scratch‐off games or seasonal releases, and players are encouraged to register online to participate.
